  3. 1. What were the four causes of the war? • Militarism-where armies and navies produce many weapons • Imperialism-competition for land, colonies, and trade • Nationalism- a feeling of national and cultural pride • Alliance system- binding with other countries in a political partnership

  4. 2. Why did some Canadians want to go to war and why did some not want to? • English Canadians felt loyalty to Britain and wanted to help • French Canadians did not and wanted to be an independent nation

  5. 3. What Country did the war start in and when did it start. • Serbia July 29th 1914 Austria invades Serbia. Russia helps Serbia.

  6. 4. How did Canadians at home contribute to the war. • Farming • Working in Factories making weapons • Giving money to the government

  8. 6. Why did War veterans feel betrayed and rejected after the war • They did not have any jobs when they came back

  9. 7.What is conscription?. • Prime Minister Robert Bordon wanted to introduce this because it would force people to join the war therefore Canada would be respected. • French Canadians believed they were being punished and they felt they were already helping at home • Americans joined the war and only 2400 Canadians were conscripted

  15. 13. What did Canada’s war effort achieve? • Gained respect from other countries and seen as a country not a colony of Britain • Joined the League of Nations • Independence- Stronger industries • Women voters • June 1919 Canada signs the Treaty of Versailles as an independent Country

Why were Canadians proud of the way their soldiers behaved at Vimy Ridge? • Biggest victory- succeed in taking control of a very strong German position in France with a high slope and a system of trenches and tunnels heavily protected by bared wire and German artillery. No one had been able to take it from them in two years. • 200,000 soldiers • 10,000 die
