QUESTION How many lemons light up a light bulb? MENU
HYPOTHESIS We think that the bulb will light with 10 or 8 lemons because if we put 12 it will explode. And it will be a complete mess. MENU
MATERIALS 12 lemons 12 copper nails or screws or galvanized nails (about 5 cm long) Copper wire Wire striper /cutter Light bulb MENU
PROCEDURE Either roll the lemons on the table gently or squeeze the lemons with your hands gently. DO NOT BREAK THE LEMONS OPEN. You want to get the juice flowing inside the lemons. Put one zinc nail and one copper nail into each lemon. The nails need to be about 2 inches apart. Don’t put the nails through the lemons. Have your teacher cut the wires into many pieces. Start with one lemon. Wrap one wire around the zinc nail and wrap the other wire around the copper nail. Then, touch the wires to the light bulb to see if it lights up. Now , try it with two lemons. Wrap the wire from the zinc nail to the other zinc nail in the second lemon. Do the same with the wire on the copper nails on the two lemons. Touch both ends to the light bulb and see if it lights up. Do this with three lemons, four lemons, five lemons, etc. , until the light up. Keep doing this with all 12 lemons. Write down all the information in the chart on the other page. Menu

RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS The light bulb did not light up because… Because the lemons are different sizes. The first lemon doesn’t have enough energy to light a bulb. Lemons in the U.S.A and Colombia are different and have more electrolytes. Menu
