  3. Key Terms • Pastoral Societies: people continued to live as nomads with herds of animals (remember the dance!) • Barter: exchange for goods people wanted or needed • Division of labor: people work jobs according to their ability. Lead to the beginning of social classes.

  4. Key Terms (Continued) • Merchants: people who sold goods they had bought from traders. • Government: organized system of leaders and laws. • Urban areas: cities • Taxation: people pay taxes to the government • Civilizations: society with developed forms of religion and ways of governing
