MOOD and TONE Tuesday, 17 April 2012
What do the terms mean? • MOOD: ATMOSPHERE CREATED WITHIN THE PASSAGE. Examples might include threatening, ominous, nostalgic, restful… • TONE: How the writer reflects their own feelings when writing. Examples might include – humorous, angry, witty…
HOW DO I RECOGNISE THEM? • Look at the language choices the writer makes. • Are the words deliberately chosen to create effect? • Are there examples of figurative language chosen to create an effect? • Does the sentence length have an effect…
VOID 1 • Peaceful, calm before the assault on the mountain… (hints of threat at times)… • Look at these words: • “Outside , in a lightening sky, the peaks would be catching the first of the morning sun, with perhaps even a condor cresting the thermals above the tent”. • What sense of mood or tone do you get here?
Suggestions • Mood: relaxed, comfortable, excited (anticipatory) • “Outside” implies comfort and safety of being inside • “Peaks catching the first of the morning sun” – awareness of beauty and sense of possibility of a new day • “Even a condor cresting the thermals” - sense of excitement of the rare and beautiful sight, sense of anticipation of climbing as an unwritten comparison is made.
TONE • Does it change as the narrative alters between description and explanation? • What tone is shown in the dialogue on P 16.8 – what tone does Joe use when talking to Richard here? • Are there moments when the tone alters to FORESHADOW the events of the story?
FORESHADOWING • Suggesting in the narrative the events yet to unfold… • Look at P21.2 What is the effect of the ellipsis here? Look also at 27.8 • Are there any other moments where Joe introduces the idea of death or a lack of possibility of rescue? • How does this affect the overall mood of the chapter?
