Goal Traditional Redesign
Redesign Overview • Redesign of two courses Math 1010 and 1100 • Traditional • Class size 30-312 • Many instructors – many styles • Modified Emporium Model • Class 1 hour per week • Lab 3 hours per week
1010 Student Learning Outcomes • Ten question pre/post test • Multiple Choice • Administered to all sections – redesign and traditional
1010 Pre/Post Results • Fall 2008 • Traditional • Increase from 4.35 to 6.15 +1.80 • Redesign • Increase from 4.17 to 5.96 +1.79 • No significant difference • Spring 2008 results not available
1010 Retention • DFW Rates Fall 2008 • Traditional 39.4% • Redesign 43.3% • DFW Rates Spring 2009 • Traditional 44.3% • Redesign 36.2% • No significant difference
1100 Student Learning Outcomes • Common final • Sixteen multiple choice questions • Administered to all sections
1100 Final Exam Results • Fall 2008 • Traditional 9.09/16 = 56.8% • Redesign 10.05/16 = 62.8% • Spring 2009 • Traditional 7.75/16 = 48.4% • Redesign 8.54/16 = 53.4% • Fall significant at 95% level, spring at 90% , however …
1100 Retention • DFW Rates Fall 2008 • Traditional 41.8% • Redesign 36.9% • DFW Rates Spring 2009 • Traditional 41.0% • Redesign 55.7% • Grade distribution very close except for W
Cost Savings • Still in pilot stage • Estimated savings • $55 per student 1010 • $16 per students 1100 • Main saving – Replace most lecture time with computer time and tutors
Implementation Issues • MyMathLab Software • Very good for • Designing course – very flexible • Examples – worked out and assisted • Issue with online exams • System would crash because student touched mouse button • Opted for paper exams
Implementation Issues • MathQuest Center – (Computer lab) • 32 workstations • Open approximately 40 hours per week • Used Math Lab supervisor to hire and “run” MQC • Need full time MQC supervisor to track issues such as high W rate
Implementation Issues • Face-to-Face Meetings • 1010 Condensed lecture • 1100 • Fall: Real World Problems – not effective • Spring: Working in groups on problems • Still tweaking • Changing the rules • Homework: turn off “View Example” • Quizzes: Three attempts to ten attempts
Future Plans • 2009-2010: Continue pilot with a few sections of 1010 and a few 1100 • 2010-2011: Full implementation • Issue: Space at UNT
