What is Physics? • See order and rules • Learn how things work • Become more informed to make decisions • Use critical thinking
What to expect from this course: • Not heavy math • Overview of Physics and it’s principles • Not covering the entire book in order • Ask questions!! • Bring in ideas, examples, questions, etc • Work together
Scientific Method • Observation • Hypothesis • Experiment • Modification and further experiment • Theory or law Engage your brain!! Breathing experiment
Metrics (page 9 or the inside back cover of your book) 3 m = ______km 5 l = ______ml 15 km = _______ m
Two step problems: 30 cm = _____ mm 0.0015 km = _____ cm 45,000 mm = ______ km
English to metric conversions: 15 in = ______ cm 1 km = ______ ft 100 m = ______ miles 1 year = ______ seconds
Measure your height in inches. Convert to meters. Measure again in meters and compare.
Frequency (f) is the number of occurrences per time period. It is measured in cycles per second, or Hertz (Hz). Period (T) is the time it takes for one occurrence. It is measured in seconds. T = 1/f
Vectors and ScalersA vector quantity contains a magnitude (number value) and a direction. An example is 22 mi/hr North.A scaler quantity contains only the magnitude, no direction. An example is 15 feet.
Vector Addition • Always draw vector diagrams head to tail. • Components are drawn to define the resultant.
Does order matter? Start on 10, 16 6 squares up 8 squares right 4 squares down 2 squares right 9 squares up 14 squares left 10 squares down 3 squares left
Velocity and Speed • Velocity = distance traveled/time • Average speed is the speed calculated over an entire trip • Instantaneous speed is the speed at a particular point in time • Velocity is a vector and speed is a scaler • Units are meters/second in the metric system
Greek as shorthand The Greek letter delta (Δ) is used to mean “change in.” The velocity equation is often written as V = Δd/Δt αβγδεζηθικλμνξοπρςστυφχψω αβγδεζηθικλμνξοπρςστυφχψω
What is the speed (in m/s) of a car traveling 40 km in ½ hour?
Relative speed and frame of reference Frame of reference is a coordinate system for specifying the precise location of objects in space.
Absolute speed limit • The speed of light is the upper limit for speed. It is the same in every frame of reference. • C = 3 x 108 m/s or 186,000 miles per second
