Influence As early as I can remember, my Mom would read to my brother and I. My Father demanded that we both, my brother and I, spend time each day reading, which I always saw as punishment. My love for reading did not start at an early age. I began school at the age of three and attended school for about 26 years straight, ending with several degrees. I blame large amounts of academic reading for my lack of reading for enjoyment. About two years ago, on a semester break, I had to rewrite my 6th grade reading curriculum to fit the advanced readers. As imagined, I had to read a LARGE amount of young adult literature and rediscovered my love for READING! Now, I am an avid young adult reader always striving to keep up the trends and influencing my students to find their love for reading!
Elementary School Library • Most of my memorable elementary school library memories come from K-3 when I lived in Riverdale, GA. I attended Pointe South Elementary School and the library was centrally located. My favorite memory of the library was when, what felt like the whole school, piled into the library and watch the second inauguration for Ronald Reagan. I have very little memories of the books or librarians, but clearly remember the space. The School VisionLeading the way and preparing students for the future.
Favorite Books I vaguely remember reading in K-3, but the few titles below I know I owned. My brother really struggled with reading and I always excelled with reading, so I feel that maybe that has something to do with not having any positive memories of reading early on. I can remember taking my brother twice a week to tutoring for reading and him crying the whole way. In middle school, I became very interested in myths and took an afterschool myth class. We performed a myth as the culminating project for the class. Also, Choose Your Own Adventure books were very engaging and I really loved all the choices as a reader. • Early Elementary Favorites • Superfudge • Choose Your Own Adventure • Curious George • Clifford
Non-Fiction I loved and still love to create anything that deals with paper, paper dolls and origami, now I am a scrapbooker. My brother and I found a common ground in middle school with drawing books, so we owned quite a few of them.
True Inspiration Easton is my nephew and a mini me. He is the sunshine of my life and I aspire to be a positive influence on him especially when in comes to reading and education. In this picture, Easton is reading in my classroom library. It’s one of my favorite pictures! “Easton can you read to me?” Easton’s reply, “I only read in my head Aunt Jen.”
