“the LORD gave Israel a saviour” • “In the days of Uzziah king of Judah” • Uzziah and Azariah are one and the same individual – a relatively good king of Judah – but took it upon himself to be priest • History recorded in II Kng 14:21-22; II Kng 15:1-7; II Chr. 26; Isa. 1:1 & 6:1; Zec. 14:5 • II Chr. 26 particularly details the strength of his armies and how he extended the kingdom of Judah

Tekoa • “From among the herdmen of Tekoa” Amos 1:1 • Tekoa – a town in Judah six miles south of Bethlehem • Means trumpet – to blast a wind instrument • Jehoshophat declared “Believe in the Lord your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper.” – II Chr. 20:20 • Tekoa was a place that one would sound the alarm from when there were invading armies – Jer. 6:1

The Earthquake • Amos 1:2 – The habitations of the shepherds shall mourn, the top of Carmel shall wither • Amos 3:15 – will smite their houses • Amos 4:3 – ye shall go out at the breaches • Amos 6:11 – smite the great house with breaches • fragments – literally fall in pieces • the little houses with clefts = fissures or cracks
The Earthquake • Amos 8:8 – shall not the land tremble – rise up wholly as the flood of Egypt • drowned = to sink • Amos 9:1 – posts may shake, cut {the lintel} in the head • lintel – safest place to stand in an earthquake • Amos 9:5 – LORD God of hosts – touch the land – melt • melt = dissolve (liquefaction)

The Creator • Formed the mountains • Formed first used in Gen. 2:7 – “formed man” • Created the wind • Knows the thoughts of man • Created cycle of day and night • Above the earth • Created the stars
“I am pressed Under You” • “Behold, I am pressed under you, as a cart is pressed that is full of sheaves.” 2:13 • “I hate, I despise your feasts” 5:21 • “I abhor the Excellency of Jacob” 6:8 • “Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD:” 8:11

A people for his name • “I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy.” Exodus 33:19 • “then began men to call upon the name of the LORD.” and “then began men to call themselves by the name of the LORD.” Genesis 4:26
God would that all men be saved • However: • “I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live:” Ezekiel 33:11 • “{God, our Saviour} will have all men to be saved, and come unto the knowledge of the truth.” I Timothy 2:4
