President George W. Bush An analysis of famous speakers
Born July 6, 1946 • Very mediocre, unpromising beginnings • No desire to be president • Turnaround at age 40 • Governor in 1994 • President in 2000
Father, George H.W. Bush • Mother, Barbara Bush • West Texas upbringing
“hispanically” • Bushisms “arbolist” “misunderestimated” The Best of Bushisms
Difficulty with large words and complicated sentences, resulted in mangled sentences • “I will continue to articulate what I believe and what I believe – I believe what I believe is right.” • Confusion over true meaning • Slow, halting speaking style – due to sentence difficulties?
Result = negative outlook on intelligence • Verbal missteps not always indicative of lack of intelligence • Bush’s IQ above average • “Some sort of language-skill deficit akin to dylexia” – Jacob Weisman • Explains difficulty with coherence
Fairly capable speaker when going off a script • “Speaking to the nation, he was learned and articulate” – David Blair • 2005 Inaugural Address • Usually only in unscripted appearances that Bush ran into trouble
Good eye contact • Pleasant voice, but more variance of tone would be more exciting • Usually fairly confident, not always poised • Gestures – simple and effective • Comfortable utilization of space
Lively eyes – very personable • His personality – a great strength • “The President’s way is an aptitude for connecting to people, in part through his familiar use of nicknames, banter, and physicality. He charms people by remembering who they are and has a powerful memory for details and figures that truly matter to him.” – Jacob Weisman • Helped him win both 2000 and 2004 elections • Example of humor in 2000 debate
conclusion • Will never be considerate one of greatest orators in the presidency • My opinion – a thoroughly average speaker • History may not be too kind, but… “There’s no such thing as legacies. At least, there is a legacy, but I’ll never see it.” – George W. Bush
