Alternative Compensation For Educators Presented by: Jennifer Nava EDAD 854 Dr. Hoehner
Possible Reasons why Educators leave the field • 1. high stress levels • 2. low pay • 3. poor working conditions • 4. weak school leadership • 5. lack of support
Many school district use the Base Salary Schedule • - based off of years of teaching experience • - based off of academic degrees and hours earned
Alternative Compensation • Can be based off of various pay schedules and must be a liable source • Educators, administrators must work with another to find a reasonable form of alternative compensation
Possible Alternative Compensation Ideas • 1. Recruiting teachers for hard to staff schools • 2. Knowledge and skill level i.e.: taking courses in a selected field area • 3. Becoming a mentor to a new teacher, coaching and taking on after school programs • 4. Performance pay based off of student test scores or teacher evaluations
On-going topic of concern • Alternative compensation must work well for all individuals involved. • Base salary schedule could contain other alternative pay ideals rather than just performance pay.
Standards Addressed • Standard 2.0: Provide an effective instructional program and design comprehensive professional growth plans for staff. • Standard: 6.0: Educational leaders must be able to participate actively in the political and policy-making context in service of education. • Standard: 7.0: Knowledge, skills and research in real settings over time.
