  4. 3-2 • What is an encyclopaedia? An enclopaedia is a book thatgives you information about alot of different things. /ɪnˌsaɪklə'pi:dɪə/ 1 2 3

  5. 3-3 What does Hi think Lo is probably doing? Does Lo find the book useful? In fact, what is Lo doing? What will Hi probably be like when he knows that Lo is standing on his encyclopaedia? He thinks that Lo is probably reading his encyclapaedia and finding out some information from it. Yes, he does. In fact, he is standing on the encyclopaedia to change the light bulb. 1 2 3

  7. 3-2 There are different types of encyclopaedias: an encyclopaedia for children one book on its own an encyclopaedia for adults an encyclopaedia on CD-ROMs or DVD-ROMs a set of different volumes 1 2 3

  8. 3-3 What would you like to use an encyclopaedia for? An encyclopaedia gives us information on all kinds of subjects and people, usually by means of short articles. The items in an encyclopaedia are arranged in alphabetical order and within topics. 1 2 3

  9. 9-1 What do you know about …? Encyclopaedias can help you with your studies. Some encyclopaedias give us facts or information about all kinds of subjects. The subjects are usually in alphabetical order with guide words at the top of each page. An encyclopaedia often consists of a number of books. These books are called volumes. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

  13. 9-5 When we use an encyclopaedia, we should knowwhat kind of information we need to look for first. Sometimes, we do not understand some important words (we call them key words) in the sentences. Then we can look in an encyclopaedia and try to find them. The 2010 Expo will be held in Shanghai. The first one has been done for you. • Find information on how people make paper. • Find information on the invention of numbers. • Make some notes on how electricity is produced. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

  15. 9-7 • Find out about festivals in Japan. • Learn some facts about swimming. • Read about how the human heart works. • Write a paragraph on the history of computers. • Make a list of some of the ways that animals help us. Tips Sometimes, at the end of an article, an encyclopaedia will tell us where to look for more information on a similar subject.   16. 9-8 Sometimes you cannot find a subject in an encyclopaedia. This may be because it is part of a larger subject. Here are two examples: Tennis may be part of the larger subject, Sports. may be part of the larger subject, Flowers. Roses 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

  18. 4-1 Before you read A Read the title and introduction on page 31. Then answer the questions. Look it up! May’s father bought her an encyclopaedia. Here are two articles in it. 1 2 3 4

  19. 4-2 • What is May reading? • Who gave her the encyclopaedia? • How many articles did she find in it? • What does the title ‘look up’ probably mean? She is reading an encyclopaedia. Her father gave her the encyclopaedia. She found two articles in it. ‘Look up’ means ‘find the meaning or information about something in a dictionary or encyclopaedia’. 1 2 3 4
