  1. Key issues for El. Coord. in 2004 (my perception) • Alice status: mature for productions. • Electronic architectures finalized and documented • Building blocks largely existing (ASICS, COTS, links) Many functionally tested (also under radiation) • Prototyped assembled units under completion (hybrids, MCMs, daughter/mother/service cards) • Systems are growing (environment complicates, new issues appears, ALICE more as one harmonized entity) Interaction with other systems (DAQ, trigger, DCS - common rules for h/w and s/w) Use of common infrastructures (GND, PS, links, crates, timing) TIME COMES TO LOOK AT YOUR “NEIGHBOUR” Fabio Formenti TB 27/1/04

  2. Key issues for El. Coord. in 2004 (what coordinate 1) • Items from the past. • LV & HV power supplies & DC/DC - Subdet. LV requirement list basically completed, ITS+Central Det.s+HMPID+Dimuon Arm HV less a “common issue” ? sensitivity to switching noise on FEE - Equip. to keep in observation (caen, wiener, arempro) CAEN contract tests for radiation and mag. field • Grounding - General ALICE strategy exists - Subdet. documentation list to be updated only TPC+TRD+TOF Fabio Formenti TB 27/1/04

  3. Key issues for El. Coord. in 2004 (what coordinate 2) • Items from the past. • Crates VME standard crate defined by PH-ESS 2004 order going on, regular check with ESS • Radiation effects - COTS documentation/links to be kept updated special attention for widely used components as FPGAs, processors, memories, regulators and ampli, Xceivers, discretes, optics, passives stimulate and collect measurements - Levels and tolerance limits agree on strategy (warning SEU) update/complete info on ElCo page Fabio Formenti TB 27/1/04

  4. Key issues for El. Coord. in 2004 (what coordinate 3) • Additional items. • Electronics reviews very important process to qualify electronics El. Coord. ex officio member ~10-15 in 2004 to come (H.T. organizer) • Electronics in magnetic field noise induced by L3 magnet tests of FEE - standard setup guidelines EMC workshop 1st&2nd Mar 04 CERN • Reporting and news link to committees, working groups, etc ALICE representative in LECC • ElCo Web page to be kept alive aim to be ALICE ref. electronics page Fabio Formenti TB 27/1/04

  5. Key issues for El. Coord. in 2004 (what I need) • Updated list of contact people per subdet. see table next slide (default is Project Leader) • Communication inputs from you, achievements, potential general problems suggestions & comments, uncovered issues, request of infos general interest documents to put on ElCo page • Collaboration & help Web page editing (thanks already to Augustinus) preparation of requested technical documents participation to common electronics meeting Fabio Formenti TB 27/1/04

  6. Detector: Proj. Lead: Fabio Formenti TB 27/1/04

  7. Key issues for El. Coord. in 2004 (conclusions) • A large program in front (I also am becoming familiar with some of the issues) • Priorities to set in agreement with TC directives • I also have to share this task with my GL responsibilities and the LHCb engagements However • Working together it must be possible to organize an optimal working program and make a useful service for the whole ALICE community: # Analyze common problems and set common directives # Supervise the implementation of the agreed coordinated actions # Contribute to put in common the large knowledge grown in each sub-project at benefit of the whole community Fabio Formenti TB 27/1/04

  8. CAEN Contract(discussion D. Gregorio) • 2+1 yr CERN contract for CAEN equipments (CAEN list) ended Dec 03 • Extended 6 months at same conditions • INFN tender for LVPS and HVPS driven by CMS (opening Mar 04) • If CAEN lowest bidder, hope that FC agrees on 4 yrs extension of CERN contract at same ceiling but including recent equipments • If negative (highly possible): • purchase from CERN (saving TVA, but std. rules) • purchase from institutes (preferred) Fabio Formenti TB 27/1/04

  9. Training VME(discussion M. Joos) • Training course ready • Max ~15 peoples for organization (a second session may be possible if more people) • One session of ~2h plus 1h questions/exercises • Date and time: • Monday 9th february at 14h00 in 4-R-017 • List of names to be communicated to me or Markus (4 names already from ALICE) Fabio Formenti TB 27/1/04

  10. Course overview An introduction into VMEbus • What you should already know • C++ programming, Linux • VMEbus • Introduction, mechanics, protocol, arbitration, addressing, single cycles, block transfers, interrupts, bus errors, VME64x • System assembly • Single Board Computer • VP110, address spaces, other VMEbus interfaces • System integration and debugging tools • Software • Drivers, libraries, special S/W developed at CERN, system configuration, code example Fabio Formenti TB 27/1/04

  11. LHC EMC Workshop • 1st and 2nd of March 2004 • First Announcement • Geneva, 12 January 2004 • Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) is believed to be a prime challenge for the LHC machine and the LHC experiments. • A two day workshop will be held on 1st and 2nd of March 2004 with the aim to identify open EMC issues around LHC machine and experiments. • The workshop will focus on certain aspects of EMC control in the LHC machine and its experiments. EMC control concerns emission control, noise propagation and system immunity. • The workshop's highlights: • The role of EMC in ESA: EMC in the European Space Agency (ESA, Noordwijk, The Netherlands) • European EMC regulations: Presentation of a notified EMC-laboratory (AEMC, Grenoble) • LHC machine: EMC control in LHC (Power group, LHC low level signal groups) • LHC experiments: EMC situation in all large LHC experiments (ALICE, ATLAS, CMS, LHCb) • Fermi National Laboratory: Power supply stability problems with EMC filters (FNAL, Batavia, Illinois, USA) • Although the programme is already being drafted we invite people wishing to contribute to the workshop to come into contact with Fernando Arteche PH-CME or Fritz Szoncso SC-GS before Jan 31st, 2004. • In order to complete our mailing list we would be grateful if you could communicate to us anyone you deem should be considered.
