  3. Domestic Policy • Plan to end stagflation was “Whip Inflation Now” • In September of 1974, Ford called for a tax increase • In his State of the Union address (January, 1975) Ford called for a $16 billion tax cut

  4. Domestic Policy • Congress created a bill that would have created more than one million public service jobs. • At the time, unemployment was at 9% • Ford vetoed the bill and Congress was unable to override the veto • Ford felt it would drive the deficit up too high

  5. STAGFLATION1970-1976

  6. FOREIGN POLICY • Kept Henry Kissenger as Secretary of State • Continued what Nixon had started with détente and realpolitik • Two major areas: • Work with the Soviet Union • “Commitment” to Asia

  7. Helsinki Accords • August, 1975 • Recognition that the post-World War II boundaries of European countries were legitimate. • Signed by the United States, Soviet Union, and European nations.

  8. “Commitment” to Southeast Asia • May, 1975 • An American merchant ship, the Mayaguez, is captured by Khmer Rouge forces (Cambodia) • Ford orders a raid to free the crew. • The prisoners had already been freed and released • 40 American soldiers are killed

  9. ELECTION OF 1976 • Ford wants the Republican nomination for President • Faces a tough primary fight with California Governor Ronald Reagan • Reagan was critical of Ford for not being conservative enough

THE ELECTION OF 1976 CANDIDATE A CANDIDATE B He was a farmer from Georgia and governor of that state He had not been a national politician He was very moral – a born again Christian He was pro-civil rights He often campaigned personally – walking up to people, shaking their hands and introducing himself • Was the sitting president and the only vice-president and president who achieved the offices without being elected. • He achieved his offices due to resignations because of the Watergate scandal. • He was seen as an honest and trustworthy man. • During his years in office the economy was not doing well – inflation and unemployment were both very high.
