  5. Amazing Words • Precipice- a nearly vertical cliff or mountainside • They hiked to the precipice and looked over. • Stamina- strength or endurance • Pat ran hard, but he didn’t have enough stamina.

  6. Vocabulary • Veins- tubes inside the body that carry blood • I learned about veins in my science class.

  7. Vocabulary • lullaby- a bedtime song • My mother used to sing me a lullaby. • Pitch- tar, very black • They used pitch to fix the road.

  8. Vocabulary • daintily-in a delicate way • She daintily picked her way through the field. • There was no place to live because there was so much devastation.

  9. Vocabulary • Constructed- built • They constructed the treehouse from wood scraps. • Branded- a way of marking something • The cow was branded on his hind quarter.

  10. Vocabulary • Resourceful- being very capable or handy • They didn’t need to hire a carpenter, their dad was very resourceful. • Thieving- stealing or robbing • He has a history of thieving.

  12. Tall Tales • Tall tales are a type of story that is sometimes based on real life characters. The characters and actions are exaggerated. The heroes are like superheroes-their abilities are superhuman and they solve impossible problems. • They often use hyperbole or obvious exaggeration that should not be taken literally

  13. Hyperbole • Big as a house • I had a ton of homework. • I have a million things to do. • He has tons of money. • That car costs a bazillion dollars. • They ran like greased lightning.

  14. Language • Homonyms: • Words that sound the same, are pronounced the same but have different meanings • Row/row • Feet/feet • Buck/buck
