Retention and Graduation Rates • One-year retention rates • 94% for new freshmen • 92% for new transfers from community colleges • 6-year graduation rates • 81% for new freshmen • Number of degrees awarded 2008-09 • 5,625 baccalaureate degrees • 1,900 Social Sciences, 866 Biologcial Sciences, 831 Social Ecology • Average time to degree • 12.9 elapsed quarters for full-time freshmen • 7.4 elapsed quarters for full-time transfers Source: UCI Office of Institutional Research.

Financial Aid • 60% of undergraduates receive some type of financial aid • including student and parent loans • Average award is $15,000 • 44% of undergraduates receive need-based scholarships or grant aid • Average award is $11,000 • 28% receive Peel Grants • 49% of undergraduate students borrowed money while enrolled at UCI • Average debt: $13,500 Source: UCI Office of Institutional Research.

Impact of Budget Cuts • Campuswide impacts • Staff and faculty cuts and furloughs (300+ staff laid off) • Small capital projects cancelled • Chancellor’s Distinguished Fellows Series cancelled • Library budget reduced 20% • Stopped heating water for public restrooms • Limited enrollments in selected programs • Number of first year nursing students frozen at 50 • Stopped admitting students to Ed.D. program • Curricular impacts • General education courses: Fewer sections and/or more students per section (Humanities Core 1A writing sections, Biological Sciences 93, CSE 21, Chemistry 1A, Sociology 1, Social Sciences 10A) • Funding for Freshman and Transfer Seminars eliminated • Summer Session Academic Support eliminated • Student Academic Advancement Services closed
