  1. The Social Impacts of World War II Group Project Overview & Grading Rubric

Overview Directions: Topics… • Students will split up into groups of nomore than 5 people (you may also work alone, but will be responsible for the whole project) • Once in groups, you will draw one of the following topics and present it to the class • Kristallnacht • Warsaw Ghetto • Ravensbruck • Auschwitz • Japanese Internment Camps • Zoot Suit Riots • Detroit Race Riots (1943) • Other?

Presentations Requirements Hints… • Each person in the group must present! • Present the event as if you had taken part in it • Should use Powerpoint or Glogster • Presentations must be 7-10 minutes long (but can run longer) • Bring a flash drive or save to your student page • Make each person responsible for a specific part • Be creative!

  4. Components A. Description & Argument (30 pts.) Back up your argument with Supporting Details Guiding questions: “Why should people know about your topic? Why is it so important?” Create an argument that answers this question (Don’t just report facts…back up your argument!) Think about: • Who was involved? • What effects did your event have on the people involved? • When & Where did it happen? • How did your event impact history?

  5. B. Maps (5 pts.) C. Pictures (20 pts.) • Each presentation should have 3 different maps that show where your event took place • Each presentation should have 5 photographs related to your topic • Each photograph needs a detailed description (more than 2 sentences!)

  6. D. Cultural Artifacts (35 pts.) Examples… • Each presentation should have 5cultural artifacts from your experiences • Artifacts need to be described in detail • Remember, these are Primary Sources • Music & Songs • Works of art • Newspaper headlines & articles • Journals, pamphlets, or literature • Interviews • Other?

  7. E. Work of Art (10 pts.) Extra Credit • Each presentation should be accompanied by a work of art inspired by your topic • Can be any medium; painting, collage, drawing, sculpture, etc. • Groups will receive extra credit for Creativity • Examples: 1. Get the class involved 2. Dress the part 3. Go above & beyond

Other Information Time Table: Hints… • Students will have 5 (45 min.) periods in the computer lab • Presentations will be held for 2 days • Groups must present on the day they choose or lose points • Stay on task! • Communicate with each other • Be on time and prepared • Do a test run • Develop a plan if someone is absent

Expectations… General • Students will use the guiding question to create a cohesive and flowing presentation. • Students will use the resources on the Wiki page for most of their information (Wikipedia and Google aren’t always the best resources!) • Students will reflect upon their decision-making process throughout the project • Students will assess the validity of their sources (why is one source better than another?)

Grading Skills Assessed: Your Grade: • Supporting Details • Inference/ Conclusion • Group Work • Assessing Primary Sources • Assessing Websites • Critical Thinking • Time Management • Cause/ Effect Relationships • Each group will receive a group grade based on the rubric (100 pts.) • Students will also evaluate group members (30 pts.) • Students will receive a daily participation grade from teacher (5 pts. daily)
