EARTH Teacher Workshop 2008: Microbial Oceanography

Engage students in modeling phytoplankton growth in the lab to learn about using satellite data for monitoring. Key concepts include phytoplankton as primary producers, growth factors, and satellite imagery usage. Students investigate variables, analyze data, and evaluate NASA OceanColor images.

  1. EARTH Teacher Workshop 2008: Microbial Oceanography It’s Not Easy Being Green: Marine Phytoplankton

  2. Activity Summary • Summary • In this activity students will model phytoplankton growth in the lab as an introduction to using data from remote sensing systems. • Key Concepts • Phytoplankton are photosynthetic organisms responsible for about half of all primary production. • Phytoplankton growth is dependent upon a variety of environmental parameters. • Scientists use data from satellite imagery and instrumentation to monitor phytoplankton growth.

  3. Procedure • Teacher pre-grows the phytoplankton • Lab set up and phytoplankton samples distributed to student groups • Student groups assigned a variable to investigate with phytoplankton growth • Students present results to class • Students evaluate satellite images from Oceancolor (NASA) and answer worksheet questions
