Wednesday: Julius Caesar Act V • MAP coming up… • Hand in your reflection if you haven’t already. • Add these definitions to your notes: • TRAGIC Hero is person, usually of noble birth, who suffers a catastrophe. The hero’s choices leading to the catastrophe may reflect a personal shortcoming, such as pride, called aTRAGIC Flaw.
Traits of a Tragic Hero • Virtue of birth, nobleness or wisdom. • Have a tragic flaw (shortcoming) • Suffer more than he deserves. • Doomed from the start, but bear no responsibility for possessing flaw • Noble in nature, but imperfect so audience can see themselves in him. • See and understand his doom, as well as the fact that his fate was discovered by his own actions. • His story should arouse fear and empathy. • Physically or spiritually wounded by his experiences, often resulting in his death. • Ideally, he should be a king or leader of men, so that his people experience his fall with him.

Thursday: Julius Caesar On a separate piece of paper to turn in before you leave:Imagine you’re a journalist at the time of Caesar’s murder. Write an editorial to express your opinion on Rome’s future. • Jot down notes on the major events and issues in the play. • List consequences Rome faces because of the battle between the conspirators and Antony’s allies. • Mark each consequence as desirable or undesirable and add a note explaining why. • As you draft , explain the consequences you foresee. Give reasons for each opinion you express. • Anticipate your reader’s concerns and biases. For each opinion, add a sentence that deflects a counterargument someone might make against it. • Include a concluding sentence that summaries your overall opinion.
