  12. Principles in Practice: Student Leadership Formation in the Real World

  13. Luke 9 One day Jesus called together his twelve apostles and gave them power and authority to cast out demons and to heal all diseases. 2 Then he sent them out to tell everyone about the coming of the Kingdom of God and to heal the sick. 3 "Don't even take along a walking stick," he instructed them, "nor a traveler's bag, nor food, nor money. Not even an extra coat. 4 When you enter each village, be a guest in only one home. 5 If the people of the village won't receive your message when you enter it, shake off its dust from your feet as you leave. It is a sign that you have abandoned that village to its fate." 6 So they began their circuit of the villages, preaching the Good News and healing the sick. 10 When the apostles returned, they told Jesus everything they had done.

  14. Luke 10 1 The Lord now chose seventy-two other disciples and sent them on ahead in pairs to all the towns and villages he planned to visit. 2 These were his instructions to them: "The harvest is so great, but the workers are so few. Pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest, and ask him to send out more workers for his fields. 3 Go now, and remember that I am sending you out as lambs among wolves. 4 Don't take along any money, or a traveler's bag, or even an extra pair of sandals. And don't stop to greet anyone on the road. 5 "Whenever you enter a home, give it your blessing. 6 If those who live there are worthy, the blessing will stand; if they are not, the blessing will return to you.

  15. 7 When you enter a town, don't move around from home to home. Stay in one place, eating and drinking what they provide you. Don't hesitate to accept hospitality, because those who work deserve their pay. 8 "If a town welcomes you, eat whatever is set before you 9 and heal the sick. As you heal them, say, 'The Kingdom of God is near you now.’10 But if a town refuses to welcome you, go out into its streets and say, 11 'We wipe the dust of your town from our feet as a public announcement of your doom. And don't forget the Kingdom of God is near!' 12 The truth is, even wicked Sodom will be better off than such a town on the judgment day. . ..

  16. 16 Then he said to the disciples, "Anyone who accepts your message is also accepting me. And anyone who rejects you is rejecting me. And anyone who rejects me is rejecting God who sent me." 17 When the seventy-two disciples returned, they joyfully reported to him, "Lord, even the demons obey us when we use your name!”. . .. 20 But don't rejoice just because evil spirits obey you; rejoice because your names are registered as citizens of heaven.“23 Then when they were alone, he turned to the disciples and said, "How privileged you are to see what you have seen. 24 I tell you, many prophets and kings have longed to see and hear what you have seen and heard, but they could not."

  17. Leadership Formation Principles Selection Empowerment Inspiration Endurance Training Evaluation

  18. Selection: Principles Luke 9:1 Jesus called together his twelve apostles. . .. 10:1 The Lord now chose seventy-two other disciples • Committed • Relational • Qualified • Potential

  19. Selection: Suggestions • General Application • Targeted Invitation • Articulate and set the bar high so the non-committed will naturally walk away

  20. Selection: Real Examples • People were hurt if not done well (AP Sunday School?) • It works better to schedule another / additional time • Personal Invitation is powerful • Learn to say No

  21. Empowerment (9:1) gave them power and authority to cast out demons and to heal all diseases. (10:19) And I have given you authority over all the power of the enemy, and you can walk among snakes and scorpions and crush them. Nothing will injure you.

  22. Empowerment: Principles • We are limited! • No fear of talented people • More for those who give away • No dirty delegation • Builds students’ confidence & ownership of the activities

  23. Empowerment: Suggestions • Grant proper authority and support your student leaders • Don’t micro-manage • Do not rescue them; Help them learn from failure in Grace • They are responsible for mentoring, counseling & health of the small group • Give suggestions and situational lessons

  24. Empowerment: Real Examples • Harvest Fest: activities for 150 children • Worship team conflict • Not enough time setting up for praise night • Small group leader meet others for meal

  25. Inspiration Luke 10:2 The harvest is so great, but the workers are so few. Pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest, and ask him to send out more workers for his fields.

  26. Inspiration: Principles • Vision: a picture (Harvest) • Calling: a greater good • Challenge: A Few Good Men/Women

  27. Inspiration: Suggestion • Motivate by inspiration rather than by obligation – they have enough guilt-driven obligation at home • Focus on Purpose and be inspire by it, not be obliged by tradition • Our job is to help the students see the big pictures • Increase ownership by involving them in visioning

  28. Inspiration: Real Life Examples • Why do we do Christmas Carol? • Internal examples: • Evangelism: Jocelyn • Counseling: Miyako • Mentoring: Stanley

  29. Endurance (9:3) Don't even take along a walking stick," he instructed them, "nor a traveler's bag, nor food, nor money. Not even an extra coat. (10:3-4) Go now, and remember that I am sending you out as lambs among wolves. Don't take along any money, or a traveler's bag, or even an extra pair of sandals.

  30. Endurance: Principles • Be upfront about hardship • Prepare them for rejection • Help leaders learn to rely on God

  31. Endurance: Suggestions • Set appropriate expectations • Commitment is required, not optional • Expect rejection and failure • Have grace when people fail • Be an example of endurance yourself

  32. Endurance: Example • Evangelistic Outreach • Small Group Leading

  33. Training 5 Whatever house you enter, first say, "Peace to this house!' 6 And if anyone is there who shares in peace, your peace will rest on that person; but if not, it will return to you. 7 Remain in the same house, eating and drinking whatever they provide, for the laborer deserves to be paid. Do not move about from house to house. 8 Whenever you enter a town and its people welcome you, eat what is set before you; 9 cure the sick who are there, and say to them, "The kingdom of God has come near to you.' 10 But whenever you enter a town and they do not welcome you, go out into its streets and say, 11 "Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet, we wipe off in protest against you. Yet know this: the kingdom of God has come near.

  34. Training: Principles Luke 9:4-6; 10:5-11 • Clear Job Description • Heal the sick, drive out demons • Preach the gospel • Detailed Instructions • Places to stay, what to say exactly • How do you survive? (food and etc.) • Worst Case Scenario • Rejection • Dealing with Failure (10:16)

  35. Training: Suggestions • Off-site Camp for leaders – better than weekly sessions , esp. for team building • Have a clear goal of what you want them to become and do – then design trainings to achieve that • Personal Mentoring for every student leader • Involve your adult volunteer staff in this – increase their ownership by relying on their expertise

  36. Annual Youth Leadership Summit • Open registration • Attendance is pre-requisite for student leadership application • Once they have gone to the leadership summit, then they can apply for student leadership • We screen each applicant and have personal interview • Attendance: • 2002-15 • 2003-25 • 2004-40

  37. Youth Leadership Summit 2005

  38. Evaluation (9:10) On their return the apostles told Jesus all they had done. He took them with him and withdrew privately to a city called Bethsaida. (10:17, 20) When the seventy-two disciples returned, they joyfully reported to him, "Lord, even the demons obey us when we use your name!”. . .. But don't rejoice just because evil spirits obey you; rejoice because your names are registered as citizens of heaven.

  39. Evaluation: Principles • Focused debriefing & evaluation (9:10) • Report and observation (10:17) • Evaluate based on job description (10:17) • Evaluate based on character development and attitude check (10:20)

  40. Evaluation: Suggestions • Evaluate every major event • Evaluate small group strategy/approach every 3-6 months • An annual evaluation party for leaders • Affirmation session • Self-evaluation and feedback • Sharing of lessons learned • Individual follow-up

  41. Evaluation: Examples • Once a month student leadership meeting • Semi-Annual student leadership evaluation
