  4. 3 Learning Outcomes Participants will… • increase knowledge of assistive technology devices to address a wide range of needs, • understand how to obtain devices for consideration and evaluation, • and learn about an option for transferring ownership of devices for transitioning students.

Assistive Technology • AT is a device or piece of equipment that is used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of people with disabilities. • AT is also a service that directly assists persons with a disability in the selection, acquisition, or use of an ATdevice. Vision AT for Student Involvement • braillers: standard and dual input/output • refreshable braille displays • synthetic speech or recorded natural voice- enhance learning • magnifiers: handheld, desktop, portable • screen magnification on computers and tablets Students can increase their involvement by using Vision AT to keep up with assignments.

  8. Hearing AT for Student Involvement • sound amplification systems: audio loop, infrared system, FM system • time timers • alarms with bed shakers • text to speech software Students can increase their involvement by using Hearing AT to improve receptive communication.

Communication AT for Student Involvement • Communication boards/folders/wallets • Sensor, plate, and button switches • Apps on tablets that generate digital and synthetic speech • Dedicated devices that generate synthetic speech Students can increase their involvement by using communication AT to express their thoughts.
