  2. Questions for Discussion • What are some important birthdays for teenagers in the United States? • Why are these particular birthdays important? • How do we typically celebrate a birthday?

Quinceañera Quinceañera – 15th birthday party Quinceañera – can also refer to the girl who is turning 15 • Acknowledges that a girl has reached maturity and is now an adult • She is ready to assume more responsibility within the family • Also reaffirms religious beliefs, good morals, and family values

  4. The Night Before • Girl is serenaded by a mariachi band in front of her house

  5. Church • Special mass for the “quinceañera” • Girl will wear a very fancy dress that is white or pale pink • Also carries a bouquet

  6. The “Court” • Several young women called “damas” • Several young men called “chamberlains”

  7. At the end of mass… • Quinceañera places her bouquet on the church altar • Family passes out commemorative favors

  8. Dinner & Dance Reception • Eat a large dinner • Waltz – quinceañera and her father • Introduce court • Godparents first dance • Everyone dances, men take turns dancing with the quinceañera

  9. Gifts • Tiara – simbolizes that the girl is a princess before God • Bracelet – simbolizes unending circle of life • Earrings – reminder to listen to Gods word • Cross, Bible, Rosary – represents religious faith

  10. Traditions • The Last Doll- usually given to the Quinceañera from her father to represent her new role as a young lady. Some choose to toss the doll to younger girls at the party after dancing with her father.

  11. Traditions • Change of shoes- from flats to high heels to represent the transition to adulthood.

  12. Crowning Ceremony • Parent or godparent replaces the headpiece worn by the quinceañera with the tiara • She is also presented with a sceptor to symbolize her new responsibility
