How Handheld XRF Works
If you are considering an XRF rental or purchase for your business, it is important to know all you can about using the XRF metal analyzer. XRF stands for x-ray fluorescence, which is the process of displacing electrons from their orbital positions. This results in a burst of energy that is characteristic to specific elements. This energy is registered by the XRF instrument, which then is able to categorize the elements. How XRF HAndheld Works
Here’s a basic breakdown of the entire process: 1.An x-ray beam is created by an x-ray tube that is inside the handheld analyzer. The beam has enough energy to affect the electrons in the sample. 2. This beam interacts with the atoms and displaces the electrons from the inner orbital shells. The difference in the energy between the emitted x-ray beam and the binding energy of the electrons is what causes the displacement. 3. Electrons being knocked out of their orbits leave behind vacancies, making the atom unstable. The atom then immediately tries to correct its instability through filling the vacancies of the displaced electrons. These vacancies are filled by the higher orbits which move lower to fill the space. This is called fluorescence. 4. The further an electron is from the nucleus, the more binding energy it has. So as an electron drops to a lower orbit, it tends to lose some energy. This amount of energy that is lost is equivalent to the energy difference of two electron shells, determined by the distance that is between them. It is this distance, between the two orbital shells that is unique to every different element. 5. This makes the energy lost in the fluorescence process unique to every element, which is how thaw energy that is released can help identify the element being tested.
The fluorescence process is completed in a matter of small fractions of a second. The XRF metal analyzer can be used for a number of testing processes like metal composition analysis, alloy analysis, soil analysis, precious metal analysis, as well as ROHS/WEEE analysis.
