Issues • Mountain pine beetle • Spruce beetle • Western balsam bark beetle • Budworm • Poplar and willow borer • Satin moth
Mountain Pine Beetle • Several BMUs in the South of the Bulkley TSA are no longer in Suppression • In late August, a huge thunderstorm tracked from near Vanderhoof, all the way to Terrace • Must have been carrying a lot of beetles, as they made it all the way to Terrace
Spruce Beetle • Flew with District staff in Nadina to identify potential hot spots • Identified areas were ground checked • Several areas are being harvested under a Community Salvage licence
Western Balsam Bark Beetle • Re-measuring of TSR plots in the Kispiox • Complicated by very deep snow pack • Will complete this year and compare to previous measurements
Budworm • Fairly extensive infestation near Tochcha Lake • Not all captured in the Provincial Aerial Overview Survey • Will continue to monitor for possible salvage opportunity
Poplar and Willow Borer • Large areas of willow have already been attacked and killed • Several records of damage/mortality on mature cottonwoods • Need to continue to monitor this insect and its impacts
Satin Moth • First record for Terrace • Originally introduced around 1920, this is another introduced species that continues to spread in B.C.
Projects • Mountain Caribou recovery Forest Health team (with Art Stock) • First Nations bark beetle ground survey training – capacity building • Ecosystem recovery project soil fauna work, and other soil fauna collaboration work
