2. PopulationDistributionAcross Barranquilla The various quarters of the city are classified according to the 6 socioeconomic levels for residential property in Colombia. Levels 1 and 2 correspond to the southeast sector, southwest, northwest and northeast. Levels 3 and 4 to the south-central, the central and northern part, and levels 5 and 6 to the north. The 47.5% of the population is male and the remaining 52.5% is female. This situation tends to decrease in recent years due to the increased educational coverage achieved in these regions.

Today, Barranquilla begins to regain the momentum and spirit that characterizes it. Its growth and progress help recover the much deserved title of “The Golden Gate of Colombia”. The rapid urban growth is generated because of the political and economic situation in Colombia, which makes the peasants move to the main cities in search of centers of economic development.
