  3. DTB203 Interior Visualisation 2 2014.2 Importing objects: Interior objects One of the biggest concerns of firms adopting Revit is the availability of content specific to their needs. While the out-of-the-box libraries and Autodesk’s Web Library (Content Distribution Center) contain many families (some manufacturer specific), there is never enough for the variety of building systems, furniture, casework and equipment that is necessary to represent graphically and informationally in building projects. While Revit provides a vehicle to create custom or manufacturer specific content, architects, engineers and planners do not always possess the necessary skills, or more importantly the time, to create this content on their own.

DTB203 Interior Visualisation 2 2014.2 Importing objects: Interior objects Revit Families are files external to the project that are preloaded in Project templates; or loaded on demand into Revit Projects to represent doors, windows, furniture, casework, structural members, fixtures & equipment, etc.

Revit Families have a file extension .rfa. Revit Projects have a file extension .rvt and can contain the families as content to be added

DTB203 Interior Visualisation 2 2014.2 Inserting objects: The family editor • Families are classes of elements in a category • A family groups elements with a common set of parameters (properties), identical use, and similar graphical representation • Different elements in a family may have different values for some or all properties, but the set of properties – their names and meaning – is the same

  9. DTB203 Interior Visualisation 2 2014.2 Importing objects: Interior objects Today, you’ll be learning how to import objects into Revit, such as furniture. You’ll need this once you have done your spatial planning. Although Cindy and Bec will show you how to do it, the instructions are in your Revit links for the CoC’s: Simply obtain a Revit Family file that is compatible with your version of Revit and download it to your computer.   Then in your Revit project, insert family and select load from file to load the family you downloaded.   If you have trouble pay attention to what hosts the family.   Lights are typically hosted by ceiling elements, windows hosted by walls, etc.   (You can get lots from www.autodeskseek.com)

  10. DTB203 Interior Visualisation 2 2014.2 Inserting objects: Loading families To load families: • Click Insert tab  Load from Library panel Load Family. Depending on the current drawing units (imperial or metric), the Load Family dialog lists the family categories in either the Imperial or Metric Library. • In the Load Family dialog, double-click the category of the family that you want to load. • Preview any of the families (RFA) in the category: • To preview a single family, select it from the list. At the top right of the dialog, under Preview, a thumbnail image of the family displays. • To display a thumbnail image in the list for all families in the category, at the top right corner of the dialog, click Views  Thumbnails. • Select the family that you want to load, and click Open. The family type is now available to place in the project.
