Population Under Age 5 by Race and Hispanic Origin, Oklahoma by County, 2000 and 2010Highlights (6-18-13) • Population Change and Growing Diversity • Overall, children <5 population in Oklahoma grew by 12% between 2000 and 2010 to a total of 264,126 • Children <5 make up 7% of the total population • The state lost 6,473 white and 1,121 black children <5, and gained 21,395 Hispanic, 10,368 two or more races, 2,152 American Indian, and 1,180 Asian children <5 • Population Distribution • 38% of population <5 live in Oklahoma and Tulsa counties • 14 counties lost population <5 between 2000 and 2010 • 31 counties have fewer than 1,000 children <5 • 15 counties have fewer than 500 children <5 • 22 counties are majority-minority populations for children <5 • In 10 counties, children <5 account for less than 6% of total population • In 3 counties, children <5 represent 8% or more of total population • Huge Growth of Hispanic Young Children • Hispanic <5 population grew by 93% • 6 counties have greater than 800 Hispanic children <5 • 10 counties have greater than 500 Hispanic children <5 • 15 counties have <5 populations that are >20% Hispanic • 7 counties have <5 populations that are >30% Hispanic • 38 counties at least doubled in number of Hispanic children <5
