Born on February 28, 1865 in Milford Haven, Wales • In 1888 – 1889 he edited seven plays of the “Henry Irving” Shakespeare • Became a member in the staff of the Athenaeum in 1891 • His first play was produced by the Independent Theatre Society in 1892 ( The Minister’s Call) • Between the time of 1908 – 1910 he suffered from a psychotic breakdown. Recovered then for 20 more years he produced travel writing, criticism, and translation. • Died January 22, 1945 Arthur Symons

  3. April midnight Side by side through the streets at midnight, Roaming together, Through the tumultuous night of London, In the miraculous April weather. Roaming together under the gaslight, Day’s work over, How the Spring calls to us, here in the city, Calls to the heart from the heart of a lover! Cool to the wind blows, fresh in our faces, Cleansing, entrancing, After the heat and the fumes and the footlights, Where you dance and I watch your dancing. Good it is to be here together, Good to be roaming, Even in London, even at midnight, Lover-like in a lover’s gloaming. You the dancer and I the dreamer, Children together, Wandering lost in the night of London, In the miraculous April weather. 

  4. April Midnight Rhyme The type of rhyme that is in this poem is end rhyme. End rhyme is rhyme that is found in the last word of a line. If the words rhyme then it is end rhyme. Roaming together under the gaslight, Day’s work over, How the Spring calls to us, here in the city, Calls to the heart from the heart of a lover! D E F E The Poem’s speaker is the dreamer out of the two friends. He is reminiscing on the good times he had with his friend out in the streets of London. This is a 5 stanza poem, with 4 lines a poem. The poem is also a lyric poem. A lyrical poem is a poem that has a song like rhythm.

  5. April Midnight Personification- It is when human qualities are given to an inanimate object. This is personification because it is not possible that the season of spring can call to us. Spring cannot communicate to people. It does not talk or give us signals to follow it. Roaming together under the gaslight, Day’s work over, How the Spring calls to us, here in the city, Calls to the heart from the heart of a lover!

  6. Imagery Imagery- is a word or phrase that appeals to the human senses such as sight, smell, sound, touch, and taste. This is an example of imagery because you imagine two people next to each other on a street with streetlights since the time of night is midnight. Side by side through the streets at midnight, Roaming together, Through the tumultuous night of London, In the miraculous April weather. Cool to the wind blows, fresh in our faces, Cleansing, entrancing, After the heat and the fumes and the footlights, Where you dance and I watch your dancing. This is an example of imagery because the heat and the fumes makes people imagine of city streets and the smog of a late city night.

  8. Repetition - The repeating of a word of phrase Side by side through the streets at midnight, Roaming together, Through the tumultuous night of London, In the miraculous April weather. This is repetition because in the first stanza and the last stanza that I have shown here have the phrases repeated. The author probably did this to convey the on going setting in London during April and at night. You the dancer and I the dreamer, Children together, Wandering lost in the night of London, In the miraculous April weather.

  9. Literary Analysis Literal Meaning- This poem is about a boy and a girl going around the city at night and having a good time. Figurative Meaning- Even if you are older with a serious relationship, you can still act like children, it is not necessary to act serious the whole time. So you should have fun. Authors Purpose- The purpose is to show that you don’t always have to be serious instead go out, have fun, be young again with who you love. The theme of the poem is love but still having that inner child in the relationship. Intended Theme-
