VOCABULARY • Plateau • A raised area of relatively level land
AFRICAN PLATEAU • South and east coasts – steep cliffs • East side of plateau – 5,000 ft elevation • West side of plateau – 1,500 ft elevation
GREAT RIFT VALLEY • A series of broad, steep-walled valleys formed by tectonic plates pulling apart • Located between the Red Sea and Mozambique • Eventually, East Africa may become an island!
WATERWAYS • Some valleys have filled with water to form lakes • Lakes and rivers provide fresh water and fish • Nile River – longest • Okavango River – empties north of Kalahari Desert • Zambezi River – has many waterfalls
FOUR CLIMATIC REGIONS • Arid Desert • Semiarid • Tropical • Equatorial
ARID DESERT • Very little rain • High temperatures • Few plants and animals • Sahara, Namib, and Kalahari are examples
SEMIARID (Semi Arid) • High temperatures • More rain than in the desert • Sahel is an example
TROPICAL • Six months – rainy season • Six months – dry season
EQUATORIAL • Two rainy seasons • Two short dry seasons • Located at the Equator • 50-60 inches of rain per year • Many trees • Much wildlife
