Key Concepts: • Sectionalism intensified due to a black majority in the Southern states, resistance to the abolitionist movement, growth of the northern industrial economy and in politics, a larger northern population allowed for larger representation in Congress.
Denmark Vesey, a free black in Charleston, was accused of and executed for a planned revolt. The news of this revolt caused a great fear among whites and furthered tensions between the races.
Slave codes that had been developed following the Stono Rebellion during colonial times were strengthened to better protect white society.
