Balanced Literacy Centers • Whole class mini-lessons often started LA • New centers were practiced by whole class • Center expectations were discussed at beginning of year and at start of each class period (no talking in reading center, reading time does not start until book is chosen, move on to another center if your choice is full, how to return center to way it was found, etc.) • Students were free to move about room as needed • Failure to follow expectations meant completing work at seat only

Balanced Literacy Centers • Students were given a matrix of items to complete during the week. • Browsing box, DEAR (self selected reading) & read aloud daily • Special weekly events were included on matrix and amount of center work was adjusted beforehand • Assigned: • Writing conference days • Reading group days • Reading response letter turn-in days

Balanced Literacy Centers • Matrix centers and expectations were explained on Mondays • Matrix was filled out on Mondays and items crossed off as completed • Work could be turned in any time during the week, but was due at end of LA on Friday • Technology links, with descriptions, were listed on class Blackboard site

  7. Epals.com • Students practice their writing & typing skills • Reading response letters can be emailed to teacher • Search for pen pals by class, project or location • Teacher can manage student emails
