Main SiPMs timing parameters to study at FNAL. STMs, MPPCs, KETEK, IRST, CPTA, SensL, MePHI-PULSAR… • Pulse shape, rise time, fall time, recovery time… • Single Photoelectron Time Resolution, SPTR • Noise floor. Some other issues: • Light sources. PiLas. Crystals. • Front end. Clipping, amplifiers, etc… • DAQ. Ortec, DRS4, etc… • Cost.

PET-TOF at FNAL • Anatoly Ronzhin, Sept 27, 2012, Fermilab, AEM
We started with 2 SiPMs with LYSO, DRS4 . We found method to improve time resolution by “clipping” SiPM signal with capacitance. We got ~11% photopeak resolution, 188 ps, FWHM, CTR. Conditions: LYSO, 3x3x15 mm3, Na22. This resilt was obtained with DRS4, 200 ps/sample, previously was used ORTEC, 3.1ps/bin…
Next: 4x4 matrix, SL readout, CAEN V1742… . Anatoly Ronzhin, September 27, 2012, Fermilab.
Summary • Continue Fermilab TOF systems development. Our area: silicon photomultipliers and new readout, based on fast wave forms digitizers (e.g. DRS4). • We found simple method to improve time resolution by clipping capacitance. • The best time resolution obtained with STM in beam conditions is at level of 14 ps, sigma, (new STMs, new readout, DRS4, FTBF). • Concentrated now on PET-TOF development. Obtained PET-TOF coincidence time resolution, (CTR), is 188 ps, FWHM, 3x3x15 mm3 LYSO crystals. • One of the possible future readout based on Strip Line (SL). Obtained time resolution on a beam ~10 ps with the SL. • Work together (including direct contacts) with STM producers (Massimo Mazzillo) and DRS4 inventor (Stephen Ritt). We also benefit from direct contact with PSEC4 producers in frame of LAPPD project. • We have studied timing properties Single Photoelectron Time Resolution (SPTR), signal shape dependence on SiPm structure, SiPms noise floor of several SiPms producers (STM, MPPC, IRST (FBK), SensL, MePhi, CPTA, etc.). • A library of traces, with 20 ps accuracy, of all tested SiPMs arranged. The library is used for SiPM output signal modeling with different light sources. • We have limited our choice with two types of SiPms now - STM, Catania, Italy and MPPC. The MPPC used as reference. This is because of very good last results with STMs (including last P on N structure), perfect feedback and free of charge STMs delivery to FNAL. • Cost. STM-$2/mm2 (engineering samples), MPPC-$8-10/mm2. 12
