French & Indian War (1756-1763) -Part of a larger conflict between Britain and France -Muscling for territory and colonial domination of North America sparks conflict
Treaty of Paris [1763] • French cedes territory east of Mississippi River to Great Britain (including Canada) • Spain cedes Florida to Britain • Spain officially gains control of New Orleans
Problems for Great Britain • Broke after costly war with France • Not much economic incentive without New Orleans • More territory, more responsibility • Colonists want to expand: • French boogeyman is gone • Felt the French & Indian War was fought so they could move west • Natives are resistant to British control • Allied with French • Thought British would push them off their hunting grounds
Indian Resistance • Pontiac fights British settlement in the North • 1764 – 1765 • British attempts to enter the Illinois country are resisted • Leaders taken as POWs • Convince Indians British military will not bring settlers
British in Illinois • Capt. Thomas Stirling and 100 members of the Black Watch sent to Fort de Chartres. • October 10, 1765 • Very short lived. • British begin removing troops in 1770s • Fort goes into disrepair and remaining troops destroy it.
