2. About Clarence Young • Clarence Young was Director of the Manufacturers Association of Flint, retiring in 1969. • He authored Foundation for Living: The Story of Charles Stewart Mott and Flint in 1963 and The History of GMI in 1969. • Young ardently promoted local history and was a member of the Genesee County Historical Society for over 20 years.

3. About the Essay Contest • It was established in 1982 in honor of Clarence Young, long-standing authority on local history. • Past winning essay topics have included: • Fisher Body and the Buick • Colonel Stockton • William Patterson

4. Contest Rules • Any person enrolled during the 2007-2008 school year in any college or university which has a campus in Genesee County is eligible to participate. • Essays must not exceed 30 typed pages; are to be based on original research; and are to conform to generally accepted standards of historical writing. • Entries must be submitted no later than Friday, April 18, 2008 to the Genesee County Historical Society, 316 Water Street, Flint, Michigan 48503.

5. Contest Rules, cont. • There will be one prize of $500.00; the judges may at their discretion choose to declare no winner or to split the prize money in case of a tie. In all cases the decisions of the judges will be considered final. All entries become the property of the Genesee County Historical Society. The Society may request that the winner present the paper to the membership. • The winner will be invited to attend the annual meeting of the Society in May of 2008 when the winner will be presented with a check. • A complete entry form must accompany all entries. • All entries receive a free one (1) year membership in the Genesee County Historical Society.

Why Participate • Contribute research to the Genesee County Historical Society Archives! • All winning essays are stored in the GCHS Archives at the Sloan Museum for posterity and research reference. Some winning essays are published in the Society’s newsletter, The Citizen, and on the Society’s website. • Discover something new about local history! • Genesee County has a fascinating history full of conflict, challenges, triumph, resilience, and much more. • Win recognition and cash! • Essay winners are acknowledged at the Society’s annual spring dinner and presented with a generous monetary award.

8. How to Participate • Start conducting research on a local history topic of interest to you. • Once your research paper is thoroughly researched and edited, submit it, along with a completed entry form, to the Genesee County Historical Society no later than April 18, 2008.
