  1. Arthur Wesley Dow Shaping America’s Art Educators ARE6049 History of Teaching Art University of Florida Masters of Art in Art Education By: Sherolyn Rymal

  2. The Shift in Art Education • Dow began a shift in art education that has never turned back as it included the perception of the artist’s eye and not just a literal interpretation of scenery; creative license was born and make it “ok” for young artists to create while still learning the important basics of formal art. He authored books such as Composition and had an important impact on the direction of art education as a result of his new ideas that Prang adopted.

  3. Influence on Artists • Dow was a positive influence on artists of the time period, such as O’Keeffe, and has been recognized as one of the main influences on abstract art. Dow’s Art O’Keeffe’s Art

  4. Influence on Students • Dow thought it was important for his students to learn about art in other cultures and bridged the gap between Eastern and Western art. He encouraged production of art as well as art appreciation for all. His students loved him for his charismatic personality and for the ways Dow and his wife genuinely cared for them as if they were his own “children”.
