  1. Defoamer for Phosphoric Acid Production When we speak of phosphoric acid ( an inorganic weak mineral acid ) the most elemental application that comes to one’s mind is its application in the agricultural and agro-based sector. Phosphorous is a very critical plant nutrient and is the foundation stone to almost every fertilizer. Phosphoric acid is also used in manufacturing supplements given to cattle, pigs, and poultry. Although industries such as soft drinks and detergents find the need of this product, its contribution to the agricultural and agro-based sector is outstandingly remarkable. The phosphoric acid is further converted into three essential phosphate salts, that act as fertilizers. The triple superphosphate (TSP,) diammonium hydrogen phosphate (DAP) and monoammonium dihydrogen phosphate (MAP.) The production of phosphoric acid Phosphoric acid can be produced by three different methods. Firstly, the wet process, where phosphoric acid is produced by the reaction of phosphate rock and concentrated sulphuric acid inside a series of well-stirred reactors. This process is by far the most commonly opted process. Secondly the thermal process, that includes burning the phosphorus in the air at 1800-3000k inside a furnace. This process yields a richer quality of phosphoric acid, commonly used in industrial sectors such as pharmaceuticals, detergents and food products.

  2. Finally, the rotary kiln process, that is very less opted but is superiorly environment-friendly over the other two processes. Leaving minimum environmental footprint. The role of defoamers Out of the three processes, the wet process is the one with dire need of defoamers. The main reasons why defoamers are required are: Rock impurities: The maximum amount of foam and undesired gases are formed due to side reactions with the rock impurities. The phosphate rock that reacts with concentrated sulfuric acid to form phosphoric acid and calcium sulfate, contain other chemical impurities that form gases such as Carbon Dioxide that stand to be a leading cause of entrained air and foam. Defecting of the reactor: The foam caused carry on to adversely malfunction the reactors in many ways. Taking up reactor space, loss of P2O5, over-flowing at startup process, the formation of fugitive emissions in the reactor and dirt accumulation in the filtration systems, are among few such obstacles that can result in shutting down of the whole system. To eradicate these problems, an appropriate defoamer must be selected. A defoamer that will rightly suit the characteristics of the phosphate rock, the implemented execution parameters and the type of acid production process.
