Promises for Peace:An Analysis of the Peace Process Between el FARC and the Colombia Government By Gabriel Bayard
The Peace Process • Colombia has been negotiating with the FARC in Havana, Cuba for the past several months. • FARC, a leftist guerrilla group, has waged an on-and-off campaign against the Colombia government for decades • Peace process focuses on six different points, regarding land reform, political integration, drug cartels, reparations, and other topics. • The peace process has been successful on two of the six points so far, a huge success. • These negotiations are perhaps the most important negotiations to happen in over a decade
My Project • I want to analyze the ways in which the Colombia media is portraying these talks. • Duranti- “even when recognized by members of the society, the act of promising, or whatever one might call a certain display of commitment to some future action, might be separated from the fulfillment of that act” • What does commentary around the peace process tell us of the likelihood that Colombia and el FARC will be able to live up to their promises and find an accord?
Research • I am looking at several opinion articles written in El Tiempo, the largest newspaper in Colombia by circulation. • By analyzing opinion pieces I hope to see whether the Colombian public actually trusts the guerrillas to accept peace.
Example: • Published the 26 of February of 2013, titled¿Diálogo o proceso de paz? • Author notes herintent of howthepoliticalprocessbyattackingthe “tactics” of the guerrillas. • Also uses apostrophesto describe thetitle of the FARC representative. • Shows themistrust in thepeaceprocees
Goal • By analyzing public opinion through the language and writing in Colombia’s largest newspaper, I hope to prove that while there are significant challenges, this round of negotiations can succeed. • I hope to demonstrate that there are avenues for the Colombian public to move beyond the incredibly damaging war that has torn the country apart
Conclusion • Political acceptance of the negotiations is critical for their success • Understanding how the media portrays the negotiations is important to understanding the overall success of the peace process.
