  3. Type of Government • Unitary semi presidential republic. • There is a bicameral legislature. The government is headed by a prime minister who is appointed by the President. The lower house of parliament is directly elected, the senate is indirectly elected. The President is elected every five years until recently every seven When the President belongs to the same party as the parliamentary majority he calls the shots but when he belongs to a different party he takes a backseat role except possibly in foreign policy whilst the parliamentary majority decides on policy and the President is in effect forced to pick a prime minister from among his opponents under these circumstances.

  9. Holidays • Bastille Day the French national holiday commemorates the storming of the Bastille which took place on 14 July 1789 and marked the beginning of the French Revolution. The Bastille was a prison and a symbol of the absolute and arbitrary power of Louis the 16th ancient regime. By capturing this symbol the people signaled that the kings power was no longer absolute power should be based on the Nation and be limited by a separation of powers.
