How it Started • 1957 – Hutu Manifesto published • Stated the anger over the monopoly of power by the Tutsi lead government. • 1962 Hutu overthrow the government • 1982 Tutsi rebels start a civil war with the Hutu government in Rwanda
The Genocide • Civil War continues • 1994 the Hutu decide they must exterminate the Tutsi minority • Military tactics were used in attempts to wipe out the Tutsi population
The Aftermath • Hutu feared an overthrow and enslavement by the Tutsi • 800,000 Tutsi were exterminated in 100 days • 20% of the population was murdered
Reaction by the World • International Media downplayed the genocide as a civil war • United Nations decided the situation was too “risky” for them to help • UN was unaware genocide was occurring
