  2. Chhath Puja One of the Ganga Puja, this is usually performed at the Ganga Ghats of Patna, devotees pray to the Sun God and seek his blessings for the prosperity of their family. It involves fasting, offering bhog to the deity and taking dips in the holy waters of the Ganges.   3. Ganga Snan The Ganga snan is a very important kartavya of the Hindus. Taking a dip in the river commences from the early morning of the Ashwin Shukla Paskha to the Kartik Shukla Paksha. Devotees make offerings, perform rituals and take bath in the holy river for relief from the sufferings and sins of life. They also fast and pray to Lord Shiva.   4. Ganga Aarti The Ganga Aarti, perhaps is the most important Ganga Puja. It is done with a small diya while flowers are floated down the river. This takes place in three cities, Hrishikesh, Varanasi and Haridwar.   5. Mahalaya Tarpan This is very popular among the Bengalis as Mahalaya marks the beginning of Durga Puja. Devotees offer "Tarpan" on the banks of River Ganga in Kolkata. People visit the holy Ganges to pay homage to their forefathers and ancestors.   6. Other Pujas There are various types of Ganga Puja that are conducted on the banks of the river. Several other pujas, like the laghurudra puja although not directly a Ganga Puja have Gangaajal as an essential “puja samagri”.
