Backdrops • Backdrop is a painted cloth hung at the back of a theatre stage as part of the scenery.
Photography Backdrops • A standard backdrop can range from a solid color muslin material in black, red, white or any other color you choose, to ones that feature artistic images of landscapes or buildings. In most cases, your backdrop will be a physical item that you can use inside of a studio or take with you to an outdoorphotography shoot.
Painted photography backdrops • painted photography backdrops were a standard feature of early photography studios. Generally of rustic or quasi-classical design, but sometimes presenting a bourgeoisietrompe-l'œil, they eventually fell out of fashion with the advent of theBrownie and Kodak cameras which brought photography to the masses with concurrent changes to public sensibility
Portrait photography • Portrait photography or portraiture is photography of a person or group of people that captures the personality of a subject by using effective lighting, backdrops, and poses. A portrait picture might be artistic, or it might be clinical, as part of a medical study.
Fashion photography • Fashion photography is a genre of photography which is devoted to displaying clothing and other fashion items. Fashion photography is most often conducted for advertisements or fashion magazines such as Vogue, Vanity Fair, or Elle.
Materials used in Photography Canvas • The first photography backdrops were made of heavy canvas, painted with classical designs. Canvas backgrounds are still hand-painted. They come in a variety of colors. Canvas backdrops should not be folded because wrinkles in canvas are not easily removed. This makes them bulkier than other backdrops like muslin or fantasy cloth.
Muslin • Muslin can be pure cotton or a cotton polyester blend. Wrinkles are not a problem with muslin as they are with canvas because they can either be taken out by misting the backdrop with a little water or left in to add a little texture. The major advantage of muslin is that it can be stuffed into a bag for easy transportation
Seamless Paper • Seamless paper is muslin's biggest competitor, especially in fashion photography. Those who want a perfectly wrinkle-free backdrop often use paper. The disadvantage of paper is that it is stored in long rolls, making it bulkier than muslin. The advantage is that once it gets dirty, it is easily ripped off and a fresh sheet is pulled down. Of course, this also means it periodically runs out and more must be bought.
Fantasy Cloth • Fantasy cloth is a translucent and colorful nonwoven material that is used mainly for artistic effects. It is not an alternative to muslin or canvas; rather, it can be used in combination with other fabrics and backdrops to create special effects. Backlighting, layering, and draping are some things that can be done with fantasy cloth to achieve interesting portraits.
Vinyl • While thin plastic backdrops are usually sold only for parties or situations in which they are disposable, high quality vinyl backdrops are available for the professional photographer. These last much longer than thin plastic or paper, and they are easy to clean. They are especially sought after for high key shots for which fabric backdrops often absorb too much light. Vinyl backdrops are also useful when photographing babies or pets because they are waterproof and easily cleaned.
