Now you may ask…WHAT IS MALARIA? • An infectious disease that gives people chills, fever, and increases sweating • Transmitted by an infected female mosquito • The parasite lives inside your red blood cells, multiples for 2 days and 16-32 new malaria parasites are made. They then burst the red blood cell, destroying it, and find more red blood cells to infect.
Where is malaria present? • Sub-Saharan Africa, India and Latin America • Present in 109 countries, 45 in Africa (tropical temperatures) • 90% of all deaths in Sub-Saharan Africa
HOW, WHY, and TO WHAT EXTENT has malaria been a problem? • ~200 million people=infected (causing fevers, seizures, etc.) and causes 655,000 mortalities each year • 86% of deaths=children, killing those future generations • 3.3 Billion people live in an area where malaria is a threat • Slowed down economic growth around the world since people are too ill to work Ex: Malaria costs an ~$12 billion in lost productivity in Africa
SUCCESSES in combating malaria and IMPROVEMENT in human life…. • Drugs: Chloroquine, quinine sulfate, hydroxychloroquine, mefloquine • Prevention: Spraying homes with DEET, bed nets • Past decade: Incidences have fallen by at least 50% in one-third of the countries where the disease is endemic.
FAILED efforts to combat it… • P. falciparom (type of parasite) have become resistant to the drugs, resulting in the failiure to prevent malaria from infecting the body • Currently ~200 million people are infected with malaria
What Would Malaria Relief do?What is the most effective relief? • Boost economy by letting people work and get educated. • Reduce mortality rate • The most effective relief is prevention by distributing mosquito nets to reduce spread and distribution of medicine to treat the infected.
