  7. What is capacity? Capacity is the amount of liquid that an object can hold. We can use metric or customary units to measure capacity. Today we will be focusing on the customary units of capacity!

  8. Customary Units of Capacity-Ounce • ounces are very small units of customary capacity. • One ounce is about two tablespoons full. This is larger than one milliliter. • You should be familiar with ounces already.

  9. Customary Units of Capacity-Cup • 1 cup = 8 ounces (oz) • You would use cups to measure the amount of liquid in a cereal bowl.

  10. Customary Units of Capacity-quart A quart is equal to 32 ounces. 32 ounces= 4 cups or 2 pints Remember: 8 ounces = 1 cup 2 cups = 1 pint Q

  11. Converting Gallons G For every Gallon, you have… • 4 Quarts • 8 Pints • 16 Cups Q Q P P P P C C C C C C C C Q Q P P P P C C C C C C C C

  12. Choose the most appropriate unit of measure • ounces • cups • quarts • gallons

  13. Choose the best estimate for the capacity of the item below 1 ounce 1 cup 1 pint 1 quart

  14. Choose the best estimate for the capacity of the item below Sara-Beth puts milk on her cereal. How much milk does she probably use? • 1 liter • 1 gallon • 1 quart • 1 pint

  15. Choose the best estimate for the capacity of the item below Tom wants to paint his bedroom walls a different color. How much paint is he most likely to buy? • 2 gallons • 1 quart • 3 cups • 4 tablespoons

  16. Choose the best estimate for the capacity of the item below Each day, Isaac feeds his puppy one cup of dog food in the morning and one cup in the evening. How much food does Isaac feed his puppy during a weekend? • 1 gallon • 1 quart • 1 pint • 1 cup
