AGRICULTURAL POTENTIAL 1. Land: Out of 75 Million hectares land size of Zambia, 43 Million hectares(58%) classified as medium to high potential for agricultural production. • So far only 6.02 million (14%) Agricultural land is currently utilized. • Irrigation total potential: 2.7 million hectares, out of which about 156,000 hectares currently under irrigation.
AGRICULTURAL POTENTIAL (continued) • Rainfall: Three agro ecological regions with the following rainfall ranges-: • Region I: less than 800mm per annum • Region II: 800 to 1,000mm per annum • Region III: more than 1,000mm per annum.
AGRICULTURAL POTENTIAL (continued) • Water: Abundant surface and underground water resources with many lakes, rivers, streams and wetlands available for all-year round agricultural production. 4. Soil Suitability: The country has ideal and suitable soils for production of a wide range of crops • Labour: Adequate qualified and unqualified (Skilled & Unskilled)
AGRICULTURAL POTENTIAL (continued) • Geographical Location: • Zambia is surrounded by Eight (8) neighbouring countries - offering market opportunities for a wide range of both primary and processed agricultural products. This is besides the domestic and international markets.
INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES 7. Primary Agricultural Production Potential: • Region I: Cotton, Sorghum, Millet, Sesame, Cashew nuts, Livestock, Fisheries. • Region II: Maize, Cotton, Tobacco, Sunflower, Soybeans, Irrigated Wheat, Groundnuts, Flowers, Paprika, Vegetables, Fruits, Cassava, Sweet potatoes, Sorghum, Millet, Horticulture, Herbs and Spices, Fish Farming, Livestock. • Region III: Cassava, Millet, Sorghum, Beans, Groundnuts, Rice, Coffee,Tea, Pineapples, Oil Palm, Jatropha, Fishing and Fish farming.
INCENTIVES TO AGRICULTURE • 8. Incentives: • There are various incentives (taxes, allowances and duties) covering income/profits from farming, agricultural machinery, farm improvements, and imports of a number of products for agriculture.
AGRO-INPUTS 9. Opportunities exist in the production and supply of: • Seeds • Fertilizers • Agro-chemicals • Veterinary drugs and vaccines
COMMERCIALIZATION OF AGRICULTURAL LANDS 10. Farm Block Development: • Government has embarked on a programme to open up viable Farm Blocks in various parts of the country to be involved in primary production and value addition. • Government to provide basic infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and electrification. • Farm Block design– one core venture (10,000 ha), commercial farms (1,000 – 5,000 ha), Smallholdings (30 – 300 ha)
OPPORTUNITIES IN VALUE ADDITION/AGRO-PROCESSING 11. Agro-Processing: • Animal or Stock feed production • Cassava Processing (food and other industrial products) • Cashew nut Processing • Grain Milling (Rice, Maize, Wheat etc) • Edible oil Production • Fruit Canning and Juice Extraction • Meat, dairy, leather and leather products • Fish canning and fish meal production • Cotton Spinning and Textiles • Bio-diesel production and ethanol production
AGRICULTURAL MACHINERY AND EQUIPMENT 12. Machinery and Equipment: • Opportunities are available in the production and supply of farm machinery and equipment e.g. ploughs, planters, tractors, hatcheries for poultry production, and irrigation equipment. 13. Other: • There are opportunities for partnerships/joint ventures with local agro-companies who require capital.
