Didi Hirsch MHS: History and Services • Founded in 1942 • 11 sites: 10 in Los Angeles County and one in Orange County • Approximately 450 employees and 200 volunteers • Serves 70,000 people each year • Broad range of services • Severe mental illness • Financially challenged • Individuals, couples & families • SPC Services • 24 Hour Suicide Hotline, 1st in the US (1958) • Support Groups for survivors after suicide (SAS) and survivors of suicide attempts (SOSA) • Suicide Response Team • Community Outreach • Didi Hirsch Suicide Prevention Center is the Program Lead on Programs 1 and 2 of the CalMHSA Grant
LivingWorks • Some of LivingWorks Core Beliefs • Open and honest talk about suicide should be encouraged • Cooperation is the essence of intervention • Intervention skills are known and teachable • It is possible to train large numbers of caregivers in intervention skills • LivingWorks offers a variety of training programs, including: • safeTALK • ASIST
safeTALK and ASIST • 3 hour training to recognize persons with thoughts of suicide • Prepares participants to use TALK • Tell Ask Listen KeepSafe • Identify & engage people with thoughts of suicide • Connect people with thoughts of suicide with further help • 2 day training to prevent immediate risk of suicide • Recognize invitations for help • Reach out and offer support • Review the risk of suicide • Apply a suicide intervention model • Link people with community resources Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services/Suicide Prevention Center
What is a T4T? • T4Ts: Training for Trainers • safeTALK and ASIST T4Ts • Extensive trainings that prepare participants to become certified trainers • Before becoming certified trainers, participants become provisional trainers • There is a protocol for what follows a T4T in order for participants to move from provisional to certified status Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services/Suicide Prevention Center
safeTALK T4Ts • safeTALK T4T • 2-day training that begins with the 3-hour safeTALK workshop • Participants are supported in transitioning to the trainer role • Receive coaching and engage in practice experiences • Learn implementation strategies • Pre-requisite requirement: to have attended a 2-day ASIST workshop • Value: approximately $750 + $200 stipend for travel costs Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services/Suicide Prevention Center
ASIST T4Ts • ASIST T4T • 5-day training that begins with the 2-day ASIST workshop • Participants are supported in transitioning to the trainer role • Receive coaching and engage in practice experiences • Learn implementation strategies • Pre-requisite requirements: established teaching and small group leadership skills, presentation experience, familiarity with and access to presentation technology • Value: approximately $3000 + $500 stipend for travel costs Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services/Suicide Prevention Center
Selection Process for T4Ts • How are candidates chosen to participate? • Candidates must come from CalMHSA represented counties • Candidates will preferably be recommended directly by CalMHSA County Liaisons • Candidates should understand and be able to fulfill any pre-requisite requirements and post-T4T expectations Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services/Suicide Prevention Center
Post-T4T Expectations • What happens after a T4T? • In the 1st year following the completion of a T4T, candidates must provide a minimum of 3 workshops • Workshop needs: • Recruiting participants • Space • Materials • Food / Beverages / Refreshments • Trainers should collaborate with County Liaisons to provide workshops in their communities Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services/Suicide Prevention Center
