  2. The environmental statement What is it? Is the main tool of external communication of an EMAS registered organization. The aim of the environmental statement is to provide environmental information to the public and other interested parties regarding the environmental impact and performance and the continual improvement of environmental performance of the organisation. It is also a vehicle to address the concerns of interested parties considered as significant by the organisation.

Minimum requirements for the information in the environmental statement An explanation of the nature of the impacts as related to these aspects The criteria for the environmental aspects assessment A description of the environmental objectives and targets in relation to the significant environmental aspects and impacts 7 8 9

  8. Planning the development of the environmental statement Who are the interested parties? Which are the information needs of the interested parties? customers, suppliers, neighbourhood, contractors, employees, stakeholders, NGOs, local authorities…… but they could all be interested in different kinds of environmental information

  9. Planning the development of the environmental statement what to include in the statement (besides the minimum compulsory contents), how it should be presented, how it should be communicated.

Collecting the information • What do I need from my environmental management system (EMS)? • the environmental policy • the previous objectives and targets • the future objectives and targets • the summary of its activities, products and services • the relationship with other companies or groups • the description of the environmental management system of the organisation • the last environmental aspects assessment and the related impacts • the data from measuring and monitoring activities • the information from the periodical assessment of the legal compliance • others

  11. Collecting the information In relation to the environmental performance reporting, we must guarantee the traceability both of the data and information as it is going to be checked by the environmental verifier

Designing the environmental statement The environmental statement should be clearly and concisely written.  If possible, avoid long and complicated documents as they may not fit the communication needs of the interested parties.  Even if we can use the last information technologies to divulgate the environmental statement, we must be able to provide a printed version for those people who have no access to the information through internet, electronic files, etc.  The EMAS regulation does not establish a specific structure for the environmental statement or the order in which items should be presented. We are free to choose the format and layout that best fits our communication needs, but we have to include all the minimum contents.

Designing the environmental statement Be sure that the indicators: give an accurate appraisal of the organisations performance; are understandable and unambiguous; allow for year-by-year comparison to assess the development of the environmental performance of the organisation; allow for comparison with sector, national or regional benchmarks as appropriate; allow for comparison with regulatory requirements as appropriate.
