Transformations in Quilting Sample Quilts
How Quilts are Made There are a variety of methods for making a quilt, however one of the most commonly used is by attaching quilt blocks. Each of these squares represents a copy of a single quilt block. The quilt block is duplicated four times and arranged in this way to create a quilt design. The blocks may be placed using slides, flips, or turns. Each transformation makes an interesting design when repeated.
“Patience Corners” This is a single quilt block made of four squares. Look at the four separate squares that are used to create this block. How are flips and slides used to create this block?
“Dutchman’s Puzzle” This is also a single quilt block made of four squares. Look at the four separate squares that are used to create this block. How are turns used to create this block?
“Pinwheel Askew” How are turns used to create this block? Can you see the four separate quarters of the quilt block?
Complicated Patterns • Quilters use a lot of geometry in their designs. • Each quilt block can be divided into four sections that use transformations to create a unique quilt block as you have just seen. • If the quilt block itself does not use transformations, the quilter could use transformations as he/she places them on the final quilt using the four block method.
