If you are fluent in something…. • “you have attained such a comfort level with it that its use is unconscious or automatic” (Jukes, McCain, & Crockett, 2001). The six basic categories of 21st Century Skills focus on skill fluency rather than just basic understanding.

Provide students with various search engines to be used when researching their famous chemist. Review proper search techniques. Allow use of netbooks and iPods to search for scholarly information. Example of Information Fluency
Ability to work together to create digital products 3. Collaboration fluency

Ability to decipher communication media and create media to effectively communicate a message 5. Media fluency
Chemistry brochure Example of Media Fluency
Students create a course description brochure to have on display at parent teacher conferences to communicate the content of the class. These brochures should include summary of individual course units. Example of Media Fluency
Students should be consistent and aware of who they are when establishing their digital selves 6. Digital citizen
My big campus discussion boards Example of Digital Citizen
At the beginning of the trimester, students will be educated about acceptable language when posting on the class discussion board twice a week. Students will perform self-evaluation as well as evaluation of peers’ posts. Example of Digital Citizen
