Is age related to the weight of a person’s backpack? By Mary Strong & Jessica Haws
Variables… • Explanatory variable: Quantitative , age in years and months, example July and 22yrs. = 22.7 • Response variable: Weight of a 2-strap backpack in pounds.
Our plan… • Used the systematic method. • Every 5th person we saw with a 2-strap backpack we asked to participate. We also, clarified a certain backpack so there were no questions of it being a messenger bag or tote. • We gathered age in years and months and weight of back pack by using a digital scale. • The people for data were SLCC students in the hall. • Concerns: Not sure if people would participate or just keep walking. Surprisingly everyone helped out. Could the time of day and specific location effect type of people coming down that hall. Could the type of classes that day effect the type of people carrying the books they need.
Data… • Age: 21.1 23.2 21.1 27.7 41.1 30.8 25.5 20.7 22.1 25.4 18.4 22.7 18.9 34.3 22.8 19.0 21.0 44.0 28.0 26.0 19.0 25.0 27.0 33.0 51.0 • Mean 26.752 • Median 25 Std. • Mode: 19, 21.1 • Standard Deviation. 8.329 • Range 32.6 • IQR 6.9 • Outliers 41.1, 51, 44
Back pack weights: 1.0 3.0 4.0 4.0 4.0 4.3 5.9 6.0 6.0 6.3 7.0 7.5 8.7 9.0 10.0 10.2 10.4 11.4 13.2 15.2 16.3 18.7 19.7 22.4 22.6 • Min= 1.0 Max = 22.6 • Mean 9.872 • Median 8.7 • Mode 4 • Standard Deviation 6.164 • Range 21.6 • Outliers none • IQR 7.3
Scatter plot with line of regression… • R (correlation coefficient) = 0.0216 • Critical value for the correlation coefficient for 25 = 0.396 • y = 9.444768 + 0.015970087*x
Analysis… • From studying the scatter plot it shows a small pattern where the older the participants got the more things or heavier things they would carry in their backpack. • R is less than the criticalvalue so this would not give it any correlation, meaning that age does not correlate to the weight of a persons backpack. • There were a few outliers within the age group so it did throw data. • An issue with data was that not all of it was captured the way it was intended, giving general data and not specific.
