Lesson 1: Buying Furniture and Appliances Consumer Math p. 170-173
Exercise A Rosa purchases a couch at a “45% off” sale. If the sale price is $494.99, what was the original price? • Subtract the discount from 100% (100%-45% = 55%) • Round the sale price to the nearest dollar to make the calculation easier ($494.99 = $495.00) • To find the original price, divide the rounded sale price by the percent paid ($495.00 / .55 = $900) The original price is $900.00. Note that the original price may have actually been listed as $899.99.
Example B Frank buys a lamp for $49.99. The regular price is $129.99. What discount does he receive? • Round the prices to the nearest dollar($49.99 = $50.00; $129.99 = $130.00) • Subtract the sale price from the regular price to find the amount saved ($130-$50 = $80) • Write the ratio (amount saved / regular price) ($80 / $130 = .615) .615…round = 62%
