Code Response 101 for health professional students
General Information • VUMC has Adult and Pediatric CPR Teams • The teams are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and provide coverage for: VUH, VCH, MCN, MCE, TVC, MAB, LH, MRBI and MRBII • All VUMC staff who are direct patient caregivers, are trained in BLS and Mock Code procedures
Requirement • All students must have a current CPR card or provide evidence of recent completion of an approved BLS course • Students must identify the correct emergency response plan for their specific work area
Situation 1 If you enter a room and discover a patient who is not breathing and/or does not have a pulse, you should • Notify the responsible VUMC caregiver to report a stat and assist in the rescue effort as directed by staff • Provide CPR
Situation 2 A VUMC employee asks you to call a code • You pick up the telephone and dial 11111, give the name of the building, name and general location of the practice/service area (not the room number) and if the patient is an adult or child) • While the employee provides CPR, you locate the code cart, unplug the cart and bring it to the patients’ location • Assist with CPR and rescue efforts as directed by staff
Emergency Carts There are several types of emergency carts located throughout the medical center. Examples of our emergency carts: Identify the location of the emergency carts in your area
